How to Calculate a Test Grade

A test grade is calculated by dividing the number of correct answers by the total number of questions, then converting that percentage to a letter grade.

Step by step

Divide correct answers by total questions to get a decimal, then multiply by 100 to get a percentage. For example, 42 correct out of 50 questions is 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%.

Compare that percentage against your grading scale to find the letter grade — 84% commonly falls in the B range.

Working from wrong answers instead

If it's easier to count wrong answers, subtract them from the total first to get correct answers, then follow the same steps. This is the approach the Easy Grader calculator uses to build a full lookup table for any given total.
