How to Calculate Your Final Grade

Calculating your final course grade means combining your current grade with your final exam score, weighted according to your syllabus.

The formula

Final grade = (current grade × (1 − final weight)) + (final exam score × final weight), where weight is expressed as a decimal.

This works in reverse too: if you know your target final grade, you can solve for the final exam score you need.

Worked example

Say your current grade is 85%, the final exam is worth 25% of your course grade, and you score 90% on the final. Your final course grade would be (85 × 0.75) + (90 × 0.25) = 63.75 + 22.5 = 86.25%.
